You can make your own pesticide from common ingredients from your kitchen. What you will need:

12 garlic cloves

1 tablespoon vegetable or mineral oil

3 cups hot water

1 teaspoon dishwashing soap (do not use laundry or dishwasher detergent)

1. Puree the garlic, skin and all, and oil in a blender.

2. Strain the mixture into a quart jar. Add water and dishwashing soap. Place a lid on the jar and shake gently to mix.

3. Decant the mixture into a spray bottle (you can clean and reuse a cleaning product spray bottle). Use the mix to spray the plants in your home and garden. Be sure to spray both sides of the plant. Apply every three days for a week to control hatching insect eggs. Repeat as needed after rain or when problems arise.

Gardening can be a fun and relaxing enjoyment. However, it is definitely NOT enjoying when Japanese beetles decide to munch away on your garden harvest. Let’s talk about ways to get rid of these annoying little pests.

Luckily, there are natural predators that will help to thin out your beetle infestation. Cardinals, ducks, geese, larks…They all love a tasty beetle snack. Unfortunately, you can’t always rely on mother nature to fix your problems, so your best bet is to obtain some commercial traps. The traps us a pheromone to attract the beetles, so the flip side is that beetles in your neighbor’s yard might detect the pheromone and move over to your garden. So, place the traps away from your garden, such as on the outer perimeter of your yard. Also, be sure the change the trap bag, located the the bottom of the trap, often.

Japanese beetles can quickly do damage to plants in your garden.

Do-it-yourself Traps
If you don’t want to spring for a commercial trap, all it takes is a bucket of water (soap can help) and a large insect net (the kind you use to catch butterflies). Scoop up the beetles in the net, rinse off the net in the bucket, and get some exercise in the process!
